Hacks To Keep Veggies & Fruits Fresh Longer

With the coronavirus pandemic all around us, life has been confined to our home and that has resulted in very many challenges that we haven’t faced in our entire lives. Going out to buy groceries or fruits and vegetables for our daily needs isn’t advisable.

The only solution to this is to order fruits and vegetables in bulk and use age-old hacks to keep them fresh. This is a problem that I have been facing myself so I decided to share these awesome ways to solve this problem. I do hope that you will benefit from this post.

Herbs:- Store your fresh herbs in a dry towel on the top shelf of your refrigerator for longer time.

Tomatoes:- Do not store tomatoes in the refrigerator. This makes them completely change their flavor profile. They will last much longer on a kitchen windowsill than they ever will be when stored in the refrigerator.

Garlic:- Store your garlic in a paper bag or in an open container instead of storing it away in polythene carry bag or a closed container. This is the best way garlic can stay fresh for long.

Potato:- The best way to prevent potato from turning into a reject is to keep an apple in the bag of potato. Apples produce ethylene gas and ethylene will actually keep the potato from sprouting.

Mashrooms:- Keep mushrooms in a paper bag to make sure that your mushrooms live longer and are not affected by the moisture.

Carrot:- Green stems leech moisture out of carrots and causing them to go soft. Chop green stems off to keep your carrots for longer.

Lemons:- The best way to keep lemons fresh is to refrigerate them in a zip lock bag. You may also try a dry airtight glass bottle for the same effect.

Celery, Broccoli and Lettuce:- Wrapping them in aluminum foil keeps it crisp and fresh.

Banana:-To keep them looking fresh, wrap the crown of each bunch with clingfilm.

Berries:- To prevent your berries from molding prematurely. Wash berries in a mixture of vinegar and water then drain and pop them in the fridge.

Apple:- Apples also last longer in the fridge. You can even put a wet paper towel on top. This helps them retain crunchiness.

Strawberries:- Wash strawberries with a little bit of white vinegar and water then store in the fridge. Doing this won’t affect the flavor and can make them last around 5-6 days.

The pandemic is time and again forcing us to stay indoors and we don’t know for how long this situation will continue. It isn’t safe to move out too much so we hope that these tips will come in handy when you buy veggies and fruits in bulk. Let us know if you found these tips and hacks to be of use to you!
