A Chinese company that was previously known as the “Hermes of ice cream” has experienced harsh criticism after Internet users claimed that a portion of its items doesn’t melt, in any event, when toasted with a blowtorch.

Videos of Chicecream, the company selling ice cream showing how the latter didn’t melt even, when set under an exceptionally hot flame or in a room with a temperature of 31 degrees celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) went viral on the Internet, alarming many consumers. Buyers were incited to scrutinize the company’s extreme costs and whether the products were overly laden with additives. The most expensive offering of Chicecream — called “Zhong Xue Gao” in Chinese — costs 66 yuan ($10).

Company’s Statement

On Wednesday, the company said that its products were in line with national food safety regulations. They also released a statement which states that “We believe that it is not scientific to judge the quality of ice cream by baking, drying or heating ice cream,”

Stabilisers, which are said to be used in the products, are known to be food additives that have received widespread approval, including from the US Food and Drug Administration. They are used frequently in mass-produced ice creams and are intended to maintain the structural integrity of consumer products. Senior national food inspector Wang Silu also maintained that the ingredients used to thicken the ice cream were safe.

Since its foundation in 2018, Zhong Xue Gao has become famous and has been quite controversial for its high prices.  Liked this post? Don’t forget to check out our other short stories in our Quick Read section
