Diljit Dosanjh: The new Twitter warrior with mighty words
He’s a singer, song-writer, actor, TV presenter and philanthropist but more than anything else he’s a natural and candid performer who knows how to win hearts in an instant.
Diljit Dosanjh, also called Paaji by his fans, is very active on social media and his posts entertain his fans as much as his songs do but a recent spat with Kangana Ranaut has revealed the ferocious side of the otherwise calm singer.
The root of the issue
When the farmer protests started against the three farm acts in August 2020, Diljit was one of the first celebrities to extend his support to the protesting farmers. And he continues to do that till date. He has been tweeting openly on the topic and, as it happens on the social media these days, has been a subject to trolling.
Talking of trolls, I think it was unwise of them to target someone as gutsy and witty as Diljit Dosanjh. He didn’t get ruffled, instead turned the heat back on the trolls to the extent that a lot of the tweets have been deleted now. Here are couple of examples of how he destroyed the trolls.
The Kangana Episode
As Diljit continued to support the protesting farmers, Kangana Ranaut spoke in support of the farm bills and shared her point of view as fiercely as she does.
Both celebrities continued to voice their opinion without crossing each other’s path till Kangana shared the following tweet. The tweet was her response to another tweet by a user Gautam Yadav which identified a woman in farmer’s protest as Bilkis Bano, the 82 year old woman, now known as “Shaheen Bagh Dadi” as she became the face of Shaheen Bagh protests.
In whatever state of mind Kangana posted that tweet, she forgot to verify if the woman shown in the farmer’s protest rally is indeed Bilkis Bano. As it turned out, the woman in the pic is Mahinder Kaur who is indeed a farmer and this discovery started a wave of reactions against Kangana’s ill-researched tweet. In response to the same tweet, Diljit also posted the following tweet
The backlash was so fierce that Kangana, upon realizing her faux pas, had to delete the tweet. However, instead of letting the matter cool off, she decided to go after Diljit, as her usual behavior is.
Diljit responded to the attack within 30 minutes and his reply was as ferocious as Kangana’s attack and if it were a match I would say the first round went to Diljit. More so because Kangana’s accusations came from a weak footing trying to hide her earlier mistake.
The spat continued and kept getting uglier by the hour. The heat was clearly on Kangana as Diljit was proving to be too logical and righteous for her. In one of her tweets, Kangana almost offered to apologize even as he started on a strong note.
Looking at how things are going, I would say going after Diljit was the second mistake that Kangana did in this matter as the attempt to hide one embarrassment by attacking Diljit snowballed into huge support for Diljit and caused more discomfort for Kangana with the exchange of each tweet.
It is evident that Diljit got really pissed off by Kangana’s later tweets and he was tweeting multiple times on each tweet that Kangana was posting. It is too early to say who won this twitter war but anyone can see that Diljit has been able to shake up Kangana, a first for her. She again tweeted almost trying to throw the fight saying “mera ya tumhara sahi hona zaroori nahi hai, desh ka sahi hona zaroori hai…“
Diljit, however, wasn’t in a mood to relent and he kept charging on to Kangana and every other Kangana fan who tried to bully him down.
As the sun set, Kangana stopped engaging with Diljit (a wise step finally) even as celebrities like Mika, Gippy Grewal, Ranjit Bawa, Ammy Virk, Jassi, Swara Bhaskar, Angad Bedi etc tweeted in support of the farmers and Diljit while slamming Kangana for her tweets.
While, he has proven to be quite a match for Kangana, this facet of Paaji’s personality wasn’t exposed to his fans earlier. We have seen him calm, composed and almost always in the entertainment mode, but now we see the warrior in him too. Trolls beware, Kangana too!
