Bollywood celebrities are known to have a flamboyant lifestyle but they also live under tremendous pressure. We know of enough cases where actors have gone into depression because of competition, flop movies or even broken relationships. However, the story of when Sanjay Dutt got depressed over a car is uniquely interesting.

Sanjay’s love for cars is no secret and when a car like Rolls Royce Phantom gets related to the performance of his movies and a long relationship, it is natural for emotions to run high.

Sanju Baba is one of the biggest car lovers in Bollywood. The garage at his Pali Hill House, in the posh neighborhood of Bandra, is more like a private auto expo of exotic cars. He is also a bike enthusiast and has a great bike collection, but we’ll take that up some other day.

Continuing with his car collection, some of his prized possessions include Ferrari 599 GTB, Audi R8, Audi Q7 and Rolls Royce Ghost.

Sanjay Dutt’s favorite red Ferrari in his collection is said to be used in the movie “Ferrari Ki Sawari”. He’s been spotted on the roads in his 599 GTB many a time. This swanky 2-door Ferrari is close to his heart as this was the first one to get added to his collection.

The mention of Rolls Royce Ghost is important here as this has a strong link with what happened with Sanjay Dutt back in 2007. In Nov 2010, Sanjay Dutt gifted this elegant Rolls Royce Ghost to his wife Manyata after the couple was blessed with twins.

However, some say that the choice of this Rs. 3 crores car was driven by an incident back in 2007 when Sanjay Dutt got an emotional set back over another Rolls Royce car.

What happened in 2007 that made Sanjay Dutt depressed over a car?

In February 2007 the movie “Eklavya: The Royal Guard” was released. The movie was produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The cast of the movie includes Amitabh Bachchan (as Eklavya), Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan among many other big names.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra was so happy with Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in ‘Eklavya‘ that he gifted him the luxurious Rolls Royce Phantom. that cost Rs. 3.5 Crores.

Eklavya turned out to be a major box office disappointment whereas Sanjay had given 2 hits in the Munnabhai series to Vidhu Vinod Chopra with ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ raking in Rs. 1.28 billion in 2006. Sanjay felt greatly disappointed that despite him bringing so much success to Vidhu’s ventures he still chose Amitabh Bachchan to gift the Rolls Royce.

This ultra-luxury car has a list of mindboggling features. It is said to have the world’s quietest cabin due to a 130kg sound insulation system and double laminated glass window. While the list of features is endless, the most distinctive features are alertness assistant, night vision, vision assist and all-round visibility with helicopter view. The car warns the driver against collision and also has a pedestrian and cross-traffic warning system. No wonder Sanjay Dutt had it on his list.

As it appears, Sanjay didn’t have a problem with the idea of Vidhu Vinod Chopra gifting something to Amitabh or the value of the gift. He wasn’t envious of Amitabh Bachchan or his relationship with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. What depressed him was that the gift was a Rolls Royce Phantom and after such a long relationship Vidhu Chopra knew about Sanju Baba’s love for cars, yet he thought of gifting it to Amitabh Bachchan.

Sanjay’s grudge was that despite knowing his love for cars and the phenomenal success of the ‘Munnabhai‘ series, Vidhu Vinod Chopra ignored him and gifted the Rolls Royce Phantom to Big B. He felt neglected and slowly distanced himself from Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

How Sanjay Dutt made it right after 3 years

Owning a Rolls Royce was Sanjay’s dream and when it slipped out of his hands in front of his eyes, he got all the more attached to the idea of owning a Rolls Royce. But there was another problem, Vidhu Vinod Chopra didn’t just gift the car to Amitabh, he also made a big show about it by inviting the media to cover the event.

While Sanjay had the money to buy a Rolls Royce, he needed the right occasion to make an equally big show about it. When he became the father of twins, it made the perfect occasion to fulfill his desire. And he did. And he did so with all the fanfare.

Like Vidhu Vinod Chopra he also invited the media to announce the gifting of Rolls Royce Ghost to his wife Manyata Dutt.

One of the things they say about Sanju Baba is that once he sets his eye on something he will do anything to get it, and this story is just another example of the fact. He waited for 3 years for the right opportunity to get what he yearned for.
