The National Emblem Crowned India’s new Parliament

The new Parliament building will be the seat of the Parliament of India which currently inhabits the Parliament House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the building on 10 December 2020. The building is designed to have a lifespan of more than 150 years. The interesting fact about this building is that the top of the Central Foyer of the new Parliament building will have The National Emblem of India.

About The New Parliament Building

This new Parliament building is constructed to be earthquake resistant and will incorporate architectural styles from different parts of India. The walls include a mix of portraits, illustrative arts, installations, sculptures, and decorative art that will frame storylines. Bimal Patel of HCP Designs, Ahmedabad, is the architect in charge of the building.

It will have a large seating capacity for the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha members than are currently present. In the Lok Sabha Chamber, there are 888 seats and in the Rajya Sabha chamber384, seats are designed. Moreover, in this new building, the Lok Sabha chamber itself will be able to house 1272 members in case of a joint session. Other than that, the four floors of the building will be dedicated to offices of ministers and committee rooms.

The National Emblem

The 6.5-meter-high National Emblem made of bronze is cast at the top of the Central Foyer of the new Parliament building. It weighs 9,500 kg. To support this structure, a supporting structure of steel weighing around 6,500 kg has been constructed. The concept sketch and process of the casting went through eight different stages of preparation from clay modelling/ computer graphics to bronze casting and polishing.

The emblem was created by Sunil Deore from Aurangabad and Laxman Vyas from Jaipur and the fabrication was carried out in Aurangabad, Jaipur and Delhi, the government’s consultant for the project, HCP Design, Planning and Management Ltd. It took nine months to complete the bronze sculpture that measured 4.34 meters in width. Moreover, to take the emblem on the roof, it was divided into over 150 segments and assembled on the roof.

Cost Of The Project

The entire project cost around 971 crores which were awarded to Tata Projects. However, the estimated cost shot up to nearly 24 per cent to about Rs 1,200 crore due to additional works, changes in construction plan, and pandemic-related delays.
