IPL 2023: Mini-auction date, venue, salary cap, player retention deadline; check latest updates
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is rapidly approaching, much to the delight of cricket fans. An auction will be held in mid-December, ahead of the IPL 2023. Last year’s IPL auction was a mega-auction; this year’s auction will be a mini-auction. The IPL 2023 is scheduled to begin in late March of next year. After a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament will return to the home-and-away format.
When and where will the IPL 2023 mini-auction be held?
The IPL mini-auction is expected to take place on December 16, 2022. According to the most recent mini-auction updates, five venues have been shortlisted: Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad in India, and Istanbul in Turkey.
The usual venue for IPL auctions, Bengaluru, is being considered as the likely final venue, but the BCCI may decide to venture out of the country and hold the event in the Turkish capital, according to a BCCI official quoted by PTI on Wednesday. When the IPL Governing Council meets for the first time under new chairman Arun Singh Bhumal, a decision on the mini-auction venue will be made. The meeting of the IPL’s governing body is expected to take place soon.
“No final decision has been taken yet but we are looking at Istanbul. We haven’t met the teams and their officials in a relaxed environment since COVID, and this way we will be able to do that. A final decision will be taken after talking to all stakeholders,” PTI quoted the BCCI official as saying.
IPL 2023 mini-auction retention deadline, franchise salary cap
The ten IPL franchises have until November 15, 2022, to submit their player retention list. The franchise salary cap will also be increased from Rs 90 crore to Rs 95 crore for IPL 2023. While IPL franchises could only keep four players in the IPL 2022 mega-auction, there would be no such restrictions this year because the auction would be much smaller.
204 players were sold at the 2022 mega-auction, including 67 overseas players. The total amount spent at the auction surpassed Rs 551 crore. The most expensive player was Ishan Kishan, who was purchased by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore.
Where to watch IPL 2023, mini-auction

Star India purchased the television rights for Rs 23,575 crores. Viacom and Times Internet Limited split the rest of the world’s IPL broadcasting rights for Rs 1,057 crores.
