Hollywood Movies Inspired By Indian Movies

It’s a quite well-known fact that numerous movies in Bollywood are a remake of superhit Hollywood movies or at least inspired by movie plots from Hollywood. But the converse is also true, many a time Hollywood has turned to India for inspiration. It is surprising that despite big cultural differences, the Indian and western movie industries have been able to adapt the movie plots with such ease.

And no it isn’t a recent phenomenon this has been going on for years, rather decades. We don’t mean to have a showdown but it feels good that even the most advanced movie industries have been looking into Indian movies to get new ideas.

Have a look and tell us in comments how many have you seen.

Hitch (2005) – Chhoti Si Baat (1975)

We all know that Salman movie Partner(2007) was inspired by Hitch. But Hitch too got its basic plot from an Indian movie Chhoti Si Baat. In the 1975 movie, Ashok Kumar helps guys to find their lady love, the character of Will Smith is no different in Hitch.

Leap Year (2010) – Jab We Met (2007)

In the words of Imtiaz Ali “I have heard that Leap Year takes inspiration from my film. I am happy and don’t want to get into things such as copyright or plagiarism. It feels good to know that Hollywood films can also take elements from us.”

Fear(1996) – Darr (1993)

The story of a crazy stalker who loved a girl and violently desired her to be in his life became the basis of the Hollywood movie FEAR (even the name was inspired). Although the story differs but few of the scenes do have a match.

A Common Man (2013) – A Wednesday (2008)

A Common Man was an official remake of Neeraj Pandey’s A Wednesday!. The Hollywood movie was so successful that it won multiple awards at the Madrid International Film Festival.

Delivery Man (2013) – Vicky Donor (2012)

Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor gave a good base for a successful movie in Hollywood. The Delivery Man took the idea of a sperm donor and reconstructed it into a story with a twist.

Divorce Invitation(2012) – Aahwanam (1997)

Film-maker S.V. Krishnan Reddy broke the trend where Tamil movies copied Hollywood movies. He went on to recreate Aahwanam a Tamil romantic comedy for Hollywood.

Win A Date With Tad Hamilton (2004) – Rangeela (1995)

A struggling actress who falls for her co-star while trying her luck as a professional movie artist, Rangeela provided a strong base for the Hollywood cult. Hollywood’s Win A Date With Tad Hamilton had one exception that the girl wins a date with Tad Hamilton.
