iPhones are among the best-sellers worldwide. Apple’s flagship smartphones are full of cutting-edge features and specifications and are a status symbol for some people. The strong demand for iPhones has also increased in counterfeit devices that look nearly identical to the real thing. There is no reason to fear if you buy an iPhone from a reputable source, such as the Apple Store. However, suppose you buy it from an illegal third-party vendor or send it to an unverified repair shop. In that case, there have been reports of consumers obtaining fake iPhones or having their legitimate devices replaced with counterfeit ones during repairs. With seasonal sales beginning soon in online and offline stores, this problem will undoubtedly worsen. So, whether you’re purchasing a new or refurbished gadget or want to verify your current one, here are some ways to tell if it’s a genuine or counterfeit iPhone.
Check the packaging and accessories.
Examining your iPhone’s box and accessories is one of the first stages in determining its legitimacy. Apple is noted for its meticulous attention to detail, including its packaging. Genuine iPhone boxes are durable, with high-quality graphics and exact writing. The accessories in the box, such as the cord, should meet Apple’s standards. This may be a warning flag if you detect poor-quality printing, loose packaging, or mismatched accessories.
Verify the serial number and IMEI
Like all smartphones, the iPhone has a unique serial number and an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. To discover the serial number, navigate to Settings > General > About. Then, enter the serial number to Apple’s Check Coverage website. If your smartphone is genuine, the website will show information about your iPhone model, warranty status, and other pertinent details. To check your iPhone’s IMEI, dial *#06#. Then, compare the displayed number to the IMEI on the box and SIM tray. All of the numbers should match.
Check the build quality of the iPhone
Apple iPhones are noted for their luxury and durable design. Handling a real iPhone feels robust and well-built, with no loose components or gaps. The buttons should click firmly, and the Apple logo on the back should be precisely aligned and soft to the touch. Pay special attention to your iPhone’s overall design and physical characteristics. The screen size, display quality, weight, and thickness should all be consistent with the original model specs. Remove the SIM tray to inspect the slot. Counterfeit iPhones frequently feature noticeable problems in their construction, such as rough edges, misplaced logos, or loose buttons, which are easy to detect if you look closely. You can even consider using a magnifying lens to look closer.
Check the software and features.
One of the most important ways to identify a phoney iPhone is through its software. Genuine iPhones use Apple’s proprietary operating system, iOS. To determine whether your device is running the most recent version of iOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Unlike the fake iPhones you see on social media, which may run Android but look like iOS, a genuine iPhone will always run iOS. Also, try using Siri by holding the power button and saying, “Hey, Siri.” If Siri does not activate, your iPhone may be counterfeit.
