We all try to be valorous when it comes to watching horror movies with friends but the real deal is in facing the supernatural. Whether you are a daredevil or someone who would like to stay away from the very thought of ghosts, here are some of the most haunted places of India for you to visit/ avoid. Whether they bring fear or thrill to you, there is something eerie about these places for sure.
Ramoji Film City (Hyderabad)
One of the largest film complexes in India, Ramoji Film studio is also said to be home to various spirits that roam around the grounds and the hotels in the area. Ramoji Rao, the famous film producer and media of the South, founded Ramoji Film City in 1996.
The Ramoji Rao Film City of Hyderabad is situated on the battlefield. This place is a graveyard of soldiers. It is believed that the dead souls of soldiers have become ghosts.
Bhangarh Fort (Alwar, Rajasthan)
Bhangarh Fort is a 17th-century fort situated in Bhangarh village in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, built by Bhagwant Das for his younger son Madho Singh.
A Tantrik priest, a well-versed magician who used to practice dark arts fell in love with the princess Ratnavati, who was also known as “the jewel of Rajasthan”. He tried to win her over but she kept refusing him. Finally, he planned to use magic on her by mixing a love potion in her perfume. But somehow the princess got to know of his evil plans and she poured the entire bottle over a huge boulder which crushed the Tantrik.
However, before dying, he cursed the town. It is also said that the roofs of the temples and houses fall down the moment they are built. Such is the fear of ghosts in Bhangarh, that the tourists are advised not to visit the haunted village after sunset by the authorities themselves.
Shaniwar Wada (Pune)
The Shaniwar Wada Fort is a landmark site in Pune, known for its historical significance and association with the renowned Bajirao Peshwa.
It is believed to be haunted so as it is suggested that you should avoid visiting it after sunset. According to stories, a prince, heir to the Peshwa throne, was brutally murdered in Shaniwar Wada. And even today also painful screams like “kaka mala vachva” (meaning “save me uncle”) echo through the fort after dark.
Dow Hill (Darjeeling)
About 30 kilometers from Darjeeling is located the most haunted hill station of India, Dow Hill of Kurseong.
Locals believe that terrifying ghosts reside in the small hill station and the nearby Victoria Boys School. According to stories, a number of accidents and murders have taken place here in the forest, and the ghosts of various children have been spotted.
The most common story that is heard among locals is that one of a headless boy, who roams around in the forest and follows people. The local woodcutters have had a harrowing time watching the headless ghost of a young boy walking and disappearing into the forest.
Dumas Beach (Gujarat)
This beach is considered to be one of the most haunted places in India. Located along the Arabian Sea, Dumas Beach is considered one of the most haunted places in Gujarat. The beach is renowned for two things, one for its black sand and others for being haunted!
It is also believed that this beach was for long used as a Hindu burial ground, therefore, it is the resting place of tortured souls. There have also been reports of people disappearing mysteriously and having never been found again.
Raj Kiran Hotel (Lonavala)
Raj Kiran Hotel, Lonavala in Mumbai, India is not a big hotel but it is infamous for being haunted.
On the ground floor of this hotel, there is a particular room, where guests have reported their bedsheets had been pulled off while they slept. Some have woken up in the middle of the night with a blue light at their feet.
National Library (Kolkata)
The National Library in Kolkata is not only well known for its stupendous book collection but is also known as a haunted and cursed place to visit. This used to the British Governor General’s residence during the British rule and has a collection of extremely rare manuscripts.
This library has witnessed several inauspicious events. When this library was undergoing a renovation, twelve labourers died in a very tragic accident.
Khairatabad Science College
Khairatabad Science College is one of the most well known haunted places in India.
This building is very old and has been deserted for a very long period of time. According to locals, anybody who enters it, “doesn’t come back alive”. “When the college was closed down years ago, the dead bodies used in the Biology labs were not discarded,”
Mukesh Mills (Mumbai)
Mukesh Mills is one of the most famous haunted places in India. It was founded by the East India Company in the 1870s. This mill was closed in 1980 due to a sudden fire. This place is very popular in India due to its haunting anecdotes.
This place came to limelight when the film industry started using it for shooting horror movies. But when actors and crew members started witnessing some abnormal activities. Most of them started refusing to shoot here
